Oh man ... are we sorry we missed all the hurricane excitment! I love a good hurricane. What's fun is to get a whole mess of folks together in one house and just hole up. Plenty of non-parishables, booze, water, coolers, tubs and buckets full of "flush" water, first aid kits, gas for the grill (or if you're REALLY roughing it, charcoal), Jiffy Pop, batteries, flashlights, candles, cameras, radios on the ready ... then just make piles of pillows and blankets and everyone snuggle in for the excitement. That was back in my Florida days ... before anyone had laptops and cell phones. Now I guess those would be added to the mix, all charged up and ready to go.
With Rita, we didn't get much of a party, despite my efforts. I kept trying to get people to come hunker down at my house, but we didn't have many takers. Van's mom and a couple of her friends came. Of course, AFTER the storm, when everyone was running without electricity, THEN we had people ready to come stay. That was okay, too, though. I'll take social hour whenever I can get it. We were really fortunate with Rita ... nothing happened to us at all. We didn't even lose satellite TV. All around us, though, it was messy. My parents in Woodville really had a time, with their electricity being out for something crazy like 4 weeks.
Anyway, Connor and I have been missing home the last week or so (if Van and Kayleigh are being nostalgic, they are doing so quietly). I had even thought about trying to get back a couple of weeks in December, but decided that it wouldn't be nice to leave Van here and go back to all our friends and family for Christmas without him. But then, with Ike, I really felt bad. Missing everyone ... wanting to be around the people I care about during all the excitement. And even missing the weather. I know that sounds strange, but you guys know how much I love a good storm and here there isn't much beyond 42 degrees C and clear skies. Just nostalgic.
But, I want you to know, Friday evening we went over to some friends house that Van works with and that are also from Houston, and we took a bottle of rum and a packet of Pat O'Brien's Hurricane mix. We toasted to all of you, and sat in the pool drinking Hurricanes with little orange slices and umbrellas in them.
We are thinking about you! We hope everyone fared well.
Cheers.

Aww, Laura! Though we'd be absolutely delighted to see you for the holidays you can't leave Van all alone over there for the holidays. But you ARE coming for the summer right? All of you? Well be glad you missed the hurricane. It was a destructive one. We still don't have power (wireless card for the computer has been nice). Keep on truckin sweetie!
